Scope and Content Barrowfield Works, Solway Street, Dalmarnock, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This works was built for Carsons Ltd, chocolate manufacturers. The main range was built in two stages, the bottom two storeys in 1904, and the top floor in 1910. The four storey attic and basement block at the west end may date from 1902. This view shows the works from the south east, with the river Clyde in the foreground. Note the length of the main range, unusually large for a confectionery works, and the large chimney, suggesting that the works was originally steam powered. By 1966 this works was disused, and had latterly been used by Cowans Ltd, confectionery manufacturers, whose Highland Toffee was very popular. The brand still exists, but is now made in Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
