Scope and Content Route of canal inclined plane, Blackhill, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This inclined plane was built as an alternative to a double flight of locks, to speed up the passage of boats (scows) and economise on the use of water. It closed in 1887 and the equipment, two caissons on rails and a steam winding engine, removed. This view shows the cutting for the railway on which the caissons ran, looking down to the south west. The M8 motorway was subsequently constructed in the valley at the foot of the incline. This was the only canal inclined plane in Scotland, and was known locally as the 'gazoon', probably from the caissons. It closed because traffic on the canal declined as it was transferred to railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
