Scope and Content Gas holders, Provan Gas Works, Provanhill, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) Provan Gas Works was established in 1900-4 by Glasgow Corporation Gas Department, to supply the east side of the city. It was the first of the city's gas works to use vertical retorts. These gas holders were exceptionally large. This view shows the gas holders from the south west, looking across the site of the Monkland Canal. The gas tanks are 180 feet in diameter. The gas works was behind these holders. After the works stopped carbonising coal it was converted to re-form naphtha, a product of petroleum refining, to make town gas. When natural gas was introduced the re-forming plant was dismantled. The holder station is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
