Scope and Content Anderston Foundry, 100 Cheapside Street, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This unpreposessing building was all that was left in 1966 of one of Glasgow's most celebrated engineering works, founded in 1823 by Henry Houldsworth and Company, proprietors of the Anderston Cotton Work on the other side of Cheapside Street. This view shows the frontage building from the south west. It was typical of early engineering works in having a number of floors, for light machining. Behind this there was apparently a yard. It was remodelled in 1899 as fitting shop, showroom and stores This works was built to make machinery for the Houldsworth textile mills here and at South Woodside, but it also made machinery for sale, and in the later 19th century made many power-looms. The building seen here was demoliched in the late 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
