Scope and Content Carriage shed, Glebe Street Station, off Glebe Street, Townhead, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This building was a remarkable survival from the early days of Glasgow's first locomotive-worked railway, The Garnkirk and Glasgow. It was built to house the company's railway carriages, and had a house above for an employee. This view shows the building from the east. As can be seen, it was built into a bank, with access to the house from the upper level. The height of the arched entrances to the shed was due to the very tall chimneys of the original locomotives. Glebe Street was used as a passenger station until the opening of Buchanan Street Station in 1849, but remained in use for freight until the mid 1960s. The house above this shed was inhabited until the early 1960s. The building was demolished c 1966. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
