Scope and Content Kipps Railway Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) Kipps Works was built as the maintenance workshops for the Monkland Railways, which served the coalfield in the Coatbridge area and to the east. The gantry was used for lifting one end of a wagon to allow its wheels and bearings to be attended to. The decline in the use of railways for freight led to the closure of this works soon after this photograph was taken, and it has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
