Scope and Content Distant view from the south-west of the Red Road Development, Glasgow The Red Road Development was commissioned in 1960 to house people from the demolished slums of Glasgow. It was designed 1960-2 by Sam Bunton & Associates, and built 1962-9. The 8.7 hectare site contains six 31-storeyed tower blocks containing 720 flats; two 27-storeyed slab blocks; and one three-storeyed block. This shows the Red Road flats from a distance, as they tower above the low-level 19th-and early 20th-century housing below. These blocks were originally made from asbestos panels fixed onto steel frames, a patterned effect being created by the geometric lines of windows and balconies covering the walls. Some were reclad in 1982 with coloured panels. This large development was designed to house 4,700 people in structures which, at the time of construction, were the tallest residential blocks in Europe. The blocks were declared unfit for habitation in 1980 before being converted for use as student and executive accommodation and a YMCA. This development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
