Scope and Content View from north-west of Queensborough Gardens, Glasgow Queensborough Gardens tenements were built c.1900 by John Charles McKellar (b.1859). Many such tenements were built in this area (Hyndland) between 1890 and 1914. These flats would have housed middle-class families on four storeys. This photograph shows the four-storeyed tenement with bay windows and corner turrets. The lowest parts of the walls are constructed of rougher masonry than the higher storeys. The tenement is raised above the road, with steps up to the doorways. Tenement buildings such as this allowed many families to live closely together on the same plot of land, which is why they were popular in cities where space is limited.
