Scope and Content Photographic copy of engraving by William Daniell showing Cardoness Castle, Dumfries & Galloway This view, from the south-west, shows an aquatint of Cardoness Castle in about 1815, made by William Daniell. It illustrates the prominent position of the castle on its knoll. In front of it is the canalised River Fleet, with two of the trading smacks which carried much of the trade of western Scotland until the mid-19th century. Cardoness Castle was inhabited until the late 17th century by the McCullochs, who were noted for their violent behaviour. The building was given into the care of the Secretary of State in the mid-1920s, and consolidated. Excavation at that time revealed outbuildings to the south and east of the main tower. Cardoness Castle was built in the late 15th century by the McCulloch family, who had been resident locally since at least the late 13th century. It is on a rocky knoll overlooking the mouth of the River Fleet, and, as late as the 1560s, was considered to be proof against attack by artillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
