Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of house 1. It is roughly rectangular with a central hearth, two beds and a dresser. There are also two cells leading off it. One of the beds still has taller bedposts. It is believed that these supported some kind of canopy over the bed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
