Scope and Content Ferguslie Mills, Paisley, Renfrewshire (Renfrewshire council area) Ferguslie Mills were founded in 1826 by James Coats as a cotton thread works. It became one of the largest thread mills in the world, and the firm of J and P Coats dominated the world sewing-thread industry for many years. This view shows the interior of the second floor of number three spinning mill, the last major addition to the complex, during clearance following phased withdrawal from manufacturing. The machines are ring-spinning frames. By 1984 the works was being run down to closure. The site has since been almost completely cleared, and developed for housing. The gatehouses are virtually all that is left of this vast complex. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
