It became one of the largest thread mills in the world, and the firm of J and P Coats dominated the world sewing-thread industry for many years. This view shows the Bridge Lane Gatehouse, with its clock tower, and to the left the three-storey spool store, and single-storey works fire station. By 1984 the works was being run down to closure.
