Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows number two bay, the eastmost of the three bays, and part of the original works. It is seen from crane-rail height. Note the cast iron stanchions supporting the roof. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
