Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows a boring and facing lathe made by John Lang and Co of Johnstone, in one of the side bays of the works. This was a versatile machine, used for machining short workpieces. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
