Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows on the left an open-sided planing machine made by Butler of Leeds, with to its right a Union horizontal boring machine. The round-ended device on wheels was an electric arc welding transformer. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
