Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows a shafting lathe made by John Lang and Co, Johnstone, with a bed nearly 30 feet long. The curved shape of the headstock (on the left) led to lathes with this feature being known as 'bullet-head' Langs. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
