Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows a self-acting boring bar in number one bay. The gear wheel at the end drove the bar round. The cutting tools were fitted into the slots in the disc, which was moved through the workpiece by a screw inside the bar. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
