Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows a self-acting boring bar in number one bay. The round bar contained a screw, seen here, running along its length, which was used to move a cutting head to bore an accurately parallel-sided hole in the workpiece. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
