Scope and Content Coatbank Engine Works, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) The Coatbank Works was founded by Murray and Paterson and Co as a general engineering works, and made steam engines, machine tools and colliery machinery. The firm was by 1983 engaged entirely in subcontract work. This view shows a pair of mobile horizontal drills. These could be moved round the workshop to bore holes in workpieces when it was simpler to take the tool to the job rather than the other way round. Murray and Paterson continued in business into the late 1980s, and then wound up because the demand for general engineering work was declining. The works was then demolished.
