Scope and Content Caledonia Engineering Works, McDowall Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire (Renfrewshire council area) This was a general engineering works founded in 1868 by AF Craig. It incorporated a foundry and boiler works, and developed various specialities, including plant for the shale-oil and petroleum industries, sugar machinery, and carpet looms. This view shows the interior of the three bays of the boiler shop, looking down the central bay. The shop had external walls of brick, and two rows of cast iron stanchions, supporting the roof, with its extensive patent glazing. The works closed in 1982, and has since been dismantled. It was the last large engineering works in Paisley. It contained a number of Scottish-made tools, some of which have been preserved at the Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine.
