Scope and Content Huntingtowerfield Bleach and Dyeworks, Almondbank, Perthshire (Perth and Kinross council area) This works was founded in about 1775 to bleach linen, using the pure water of the river Almond, and became one of the largest bleachworks in Scotland. It continued in use until 1981 in the ownership of Burt, Lumsden and Co Ltd. This view shows in the foreground a three-bowl (roll) impregnating mangle, used for applying special finishes to cloth. To the rear is a stenter, a machine used for drying cloth to a standard width. Bleaching was undertaken with cloth from the loom sewn into long lengths. After the chemical processes of bleaching it was usual to treat the cloth with various finishing materials before drying it to width. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
