Scope and Content Smith and Wellstood's Foundry, Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire (Falkirk council area) This foundry was established by an American partnership to use the excellent locally-produced foundry pig-iron to make free-standing coal and woo-burning cast-iron stoves of the so-called American type. This view shows part of the works beside the Forth and Clyde Canal, The mural painted on the building was a recent improvement in 1981. Note the tops of the cupola furnaces on the left. These furnaces were used for melting iron for making castings. Smith and Wellstood were still making cast-iron stove parts in 1981, and in other parts of the complex were producing stainless-steel catering equipment. Despite vigorous management the works had closed by 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
