Scope and Content Millport Harbour, Millport, Great Cumbrae, Bute (North Ayrshire council area) The harbour at Millport, known as Knox's Port, was built for small fishing boats, and to handle the trading smacks and gabberts which served the island until the late 19th century. The steamer pier was built in 1833, and extended in 1860 and 1906. This view shows the harbour from the west, with its two masonry piers forming a roughly rectangular basin. Its small scale is evident. The wooden boat in the centre is a motor launch of the type used in the mid 20th century for public boat trips. This harbour is now only used by small pleasure craft. From the late 19th century steam 'puffers', one of which was owned in Millport, supplied the island with coal, but these berthed at the side of the adjacent steamer pier.
