Scope and Content Fort, Arbory Hill, Lanarkshire This fort, spectacularly situated on the summit of Arbory Hill, exhibits two phases of construction. The later is represented by a circular, thick-walled enclosure, which stands within the area enclosed by the earlier multi-vallate defences. In this view from the east, taken under a light dusting of snow, the fort occupying the summit of the hill is clearly visible, and traces of a linear earthwork providing additional protection in the saddle to the east can also be seen. Numerous forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC. Some, as here but not visible on this photograph, contain traces of the stances of timber round-houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
