Scope and Content Glen Mhor Distillery, Muirtown, Inverness (Highland council area) This Highland Malt whisky distillery was built by James Mackinlay and John Birnie of Charles Mackinlay and Co, blenders, Leith in 1892. Initially a partnership, the firm was incorporated in 1906 as Mackinlays and Birnie Ltd. This view shows the distillery courtyard, with the main productive buildings to the rear. To the right are the maltings, converted to operate on the Saladin mechanised principle. On the left is the end of one of the maturing warehouses. Mackinlays and Birnie Ltd were acquired in 1972 by The Distillers' Co Ltd, who closed this distillery in 1983. The buildings were later demolished and the site developed as a shopping centre.
