Scope and Content Glen Albyn Distillery, Muirtown, Inverness (Highland council area) This Highland Malt whisky distillery was founded in 1846 by Provost James Sutherland of Inverness. After a period of disuse it was converted into a grain mill c1866. It was rebuilt as a distillery in 1884, and purchased in 1920 by Mackinlays and Birnie. This view shows the distillery courtyard, with the main productive buildings to the rear. To the left are maturing warehouses, four-storey on this side and two to Muirtown Basin on the Caledonian Canal, which was also rail-connected. Mackinlays and Birnie Ltd were acquired in 1972 by The Distillers' Co Ltd, who closed this distillery in 1983. The buildings were later demolished and the site developed as a supermarket.
