Scope and Content Muirtown Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Inverness-shire (Highland council area) The Caledonian Canal was designed by Thomas Telford and built with Government funding with the objectives of providing a safe passage across Scotland, and of providing employment in the Highlands to counter pressure for migration. This view shows fishing boats leaving the top lock chamber of the four which form the Muirtown flight, on the outskirts of Inverness. The wooden wharf on the right was provided for temporary moorings for vessels using the locks. The vessels seen here are typical of those which used the canal to get speedily from the east-coast fishing grounds to those on the west, and which formed the bulk of the commercial users of the canal by 1980.
