Scope and Content Muirtown Wharf, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Inverness-shire (Highland council area) The Caledonian Canal was designed by Thomas Telford and built with Government funding with the objectives of providing a safe passage across Scotland, and of providing employment in the Highlands to counter pressure for migration. This view shows the tug and icebreaker 'Scot 2' at Muirtown Wharf, at the top of the Muirtown Locks. This vessel provided sailings on the canal for many years. Note the warehouses behind the vessel, and the hand crane. Steamer services operated from the 1820s to the 1930s from Banavie, at the west end of the canal, to Muirtown, at first with steamer connections from Oban to Corpach, and from the 1890s with a rail link from the West Highland Railway.
