Red Smiddy Ironworks Excavation photograph; view of tuyere hole

SC 573055

Description Red Smiddy Ironworks Excavation photograph; view of tuyere hole

Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 573055

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former blast furnace, Red Smiddy, Poolewe, Ross and Cromarty (Highland council area) This was one of two charcoal-fuelled blast furnaces built by Sir George Hay under a privilege granted by King James VI. This was the second, and more advanced, the earlier one being at Letterewe, further to the south east. This view shows the hole through which air was blown into the blast furnace using bellows situated in the space in front. Note to the left the space between the inner lining and the outer casing, filled with sand to allow for expansion when in use. This view was taken when the remains of the furnace were excavated, revealing that it was similar in basic design to furnaces built more than a century later for smelting iron with charcoal.
