Scope and Content Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) This distillery was mentioned in 1794, when its then owner, Alexander Stewart, was sequestrated. It was revived in 1817 by John McDougall and Co. Eventually it was acquired outright by Hiram Walker and Sons (Scotland) Ltd in 1977. This view shows the interior of the upper floor of a range of two-storey warehouses at Ardbeg. Note the plastered walls and ceilings, an unusual refinement. When in use, casks would have been stored three-high, with planks of wood between them. Ardbeg operated intermittently under Hiram Walker and their successors Allied Distillers until 1997, when they sold the distillery to Glenmorangie plc, who speedily reopened it, though they did not revive the floor maltings.
