Scope and Content Ardbeg Distillery, Islay, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) This distillery was mentioned in 1794, when its then owner, Alexander Stewart, was sequestrated. It was revived in 1817 by John McDougall and Co. Eventually it was acquired outright by Hiram Walker and Sons (Scotland) Ltd in 1977. This view shows a range of traditional warehouses, the one on the right being, unusually two-storey. These warehouses had plastered interiors, another unusual feature. They were almost empty in 1980, and had gone by 1997. Ardbeg operated intermittently under Hiram Walker and their successors Allied Distillers until 1997, when they sold the distillery to Glenmorangie plc, who speedily reopened it, though they did not revive the floor maltings.
