Scope and Content Port Ellen Distillery, Port Ellen, Islay, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) This Islay Malt whisky distillery was founded in 1825 by AK Mackay and Co. It had a complex history of ownership, and was eventually acquired in 1927 by subsidiaries of The Distillers' Co Ltd, who closed it in 1929. It was revived in 1966-67. This view shows the distillery from the top of the drum maltings built next to it in 1973, with the roof of a malt storage bin in the foreground. The double pagoda roof dates from the 1960s. Behind it are the productive buildings. When the distillery was revived the number of stills was increased from two to four. The maltings closed when the new drum maltings opened, and the distillery in 1983, but the warehouses, which had been kept in use from 1929, are still used. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
