Scope and Content Former Lochindaal Distillery, Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll This Islay Malt whisky distillery was founded in 1829 by Colin Campbell. It had a complex history of ownership, and was eventually acquired in 1929, when it was owned by Benmore Distilleries Ltd, by the Distillers' Co Ltd, who closed it. This view shows part of what remained of the distillery in 1980, looking south from the entrance. In the centre is a four-bay block of warehouses with curved corrugated-iron roofs, with a more conventional range to the left. After closure in 1929 the DCL retained the warehouses for maturing spirit made in their other Islay distilleries, until the 1980s. The warehouse on the left in this view was then converted for use by the local community. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
