Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 572939

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bruichladdich Distillery, near Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) This Islay Malt whisky distillery was founded in 1881 by Robert Harvey and Co, whose partners also owned the Yoker and Dundashill distilleries. They probably built it to supply highly peated whisky for their own blending operations. This view shows the west side of the distillery from the north west. The tall pyramid-roofed section is the mash-house, heightened in 1975, with the tun room and stillhouse to the right. The chimney marks the boiler house. The distillery was closed from 1929-37 and was purchased in 1938 by a group with American connections. It was eventually, after several changes of ownership, bought by Invergordon Holdings Ltd, whose successors, JBB (greater Europe) plc still own it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
