Scope and Content Glenkinchie Distillery, near Pencaitland, East Lothian This Lowland Malt distillery was founded in 1837 by John and George Rate, but was disused from 1853 to 1880, when it was revived, and largely rebuilt, by the Glen Kinchie Distillery Co. It became part of Scottish Malt Distillers in 1914. This view shows the large block of brick-built maltings built in the early 1880s by the new company. This style of building was more typical of a Lowland urban industrial building of the period. The maltings had closed in 1968. Glenkinchie remains in the ownership of the successors to Scottish Malt Distillers, United Distillers and Vintners, and is in 2001 the only Lowland Malt Distillery in regular production. It has a fine visitor centre and small museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
