Description Glenkinchie Distillery, Model Distillery View of worms and spirit receiver

Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 572897

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glenkinchie Distillery, near Pencaitland, East Lothian This Lowland Malt distillery was founded in 1837 by John and George Rate, but was disused from 1853 to 1880, when it was revived, and largely rebuilt, by the Glen Kinchie Distillery Co. It became part of Scottish Malt Distillers in 1914. This view shows a section of a model of a malt whisky distillery built for the 1924 Empire Exhibition at Wembley and now in the museum at Glenkinchie. This section shows the worm tubs, to the right, and the receiver room to the left, with the spirit safe. Glenkinchie remains in the ownership of the successors to Scottish Malt Distillers, United Distillers and Vintners, and is in 2001 the only Lowland Malt Distillery in regular production. It has a fine visitor centre and small museum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
