Scope and Content Glen Scotia Distillery, Campbeltown, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) This distillery is said to have been founded as Scotia Distillery in 1832 by Stewart, Galbraith and Co, who owned it until 1895. It then passed though various hands until 1955, when it was purchased by A Gillies and Co. This view shows a brass hydrometer, used to measure the strength of alcohol and water mixtures in degrees proof, a traditional measure which had in 1980 been recently been replaced by percentage of alcohol by volume. In 1980 this was one of only two surviving Campbeltown distilleries, the other being Springbank. This one belonged to Amalgamated Distilled Products Ltd, who took over A Gillies and Co in 1970. It was closed in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
