Scope and Content No 62 Restalrig Road South before restoration, Restalrig, Edinburgh The village of Restalrig, to the east of Edinburgh, developed around its ancient parish church. Originally surrounded by farmland, the old village is now part of a post-1925 housing development which stretches north from the main East Coast railway line. This row of cottages dates from the late 17th century. The projecting crowstepped stair-tower of No 62 has the date '1678' on the lintel above the doorway, and is probably the oldest house in the village. The pend (left) led to the 16th-century Deanery. In 1938 this row of cottages was remodelled with the lower windows built up and converted into shop fronts, and the upper storey altered with cement crowsteps added over the windows.
