Scope and Content The old village of Restalrig, Restalrig Road South, Edinburgh The village of Restalrig, to the east of Edinburgh, developed around its ancient parish church. Originally surrounded by farmland, the old village is now part of a post-1925 housing development which stretches north from the main East Coast railway line. The church, dating from the 15th century, lies at the heart of the village. In front is St Triduana's Well, with a conical roof topped by a statue of the saint. The row of early 18th-century cottages has outside stairways and gas lamps on its street wall. Not much of the original village of Restalrig survives, but it has an interesting history based around the obscure St Triduana, who, by the late Middle Ages, had a cult at Restalrig, and had acquired a reputation for curing eye complaints.
