Scope and Content Aerial view of Stockbridge and the New Town, Edinburgh Stockbridge, Edinburgh's northew Town village, straddles the Water of Leith to the north of the city between the older communities of Dean and Canonmills. The pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. Roads from Royal Circus (left) and Moray Place (right) converge at the Stock Bridge, built in 1786 to carry New Town traffic over the Water of Leith, and hence allowing the initial Georgian development in the village on land by the river (lower right). In the early 19th century, Stockbridge's proximity to the New Town made it a popular area in which to establish some of the great new educational institutions of the day. Later, the Victorian era brought the Colonies, tenements, and the Board Schools. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
