Scope and Content Macallan Distillery, near Craigellachie, Moray (Moray council area) This distillery was founded as Elchies Distillery in 1824 under the provisions of the 1823 Act passed to encourage small-scale distillation. It was purchased in 1892 by Roderick Kemp who renamed it Macallan and rebuilt it. This view shows the exterior of the newer stillhouse, built in 1974-5 when the number of stills was increased from twelve to 21. The stills in this house were gas fired in 1980. Macallan had become by the 1970s the industry standard for quality in a first-class malt whisky, and the distillery was expanded accordingly, from six stills in 1965 to 21 in 1975, in two still houses. The distillery is now owned by Highland Distilleries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
