Description Rothes, Glenspey Distillery General View

Date 7/5/1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 571438

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glenspey-Glenlivet Distillery, Rothes, Moray (Moray council area) This distillery appears to have been founded in the 1870s by James Stuart and Co. It was acquired in 1887 by W and A Gilbey Ltd of London, and is still owned by their ultimate successors, United Distillers and Vintners. It was rebuilt in 1970. This view shows the exterior of the distillery, with the stillhouse to the right. The steel hopper is for receiving draff, the spent grains from mashing, which is then collected by lorry and taken to the dark grains plant nearby in Rothes. This distillery is situated in a back street of Rothes, and has never attracted much attention, but produces an excellent blending whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
