Scope and Content Mortlach Distillery, Dufftown, Banffshire (Moray council area) This distillery was founded in about 1824, it is said by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh and Alexander Gordon. It was dismantled in 1832, and revived in 1852 by John Gordon. It was doubled in size in 1897, and subsequently much altered. This view shows the distillery from the north east, with the productive buildings to the left. One block of maltings is on the right, and another behind the gatehouse, which was altered in the late1970s. The maltings closed in 1968. Mortlach was one of the most successful Highland malt whisky distilleries in the 19th century. It was acquired by John Walker and Sons in 1923, and passed to The Distillers Co Ltd in 1925. They rebuilt the productive buildings in 1963-4. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
