Scope and Content Avonbank Bleach Works, Millheugh, Larkhall, Lanarkshire (South Lanarkshire council area) Avonbank Bleach Works was founded a calico printing works c1796. It appears to have been converted into a distillery, as Avonglen Distillery, in 1827, and then into a bleach works in about 1836, which closed in 1980. This view shows rolls of dyed and sized cloth being moved by hand barrow to the new beetling shop for finishing. This view was taken during the filming of the process by Strathclyde University's film unit, just before the works closed. Latterly this works specialised in making beetled cloth, made by a process in which dyed and sized cotton cloth was hammered by wooden hammers to close up its texture. The new beetling shop, built in the early 1940s, was the last part to operate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
