Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating William Turnbull and family, Lempitlaw churchyard This gravestone commemorates William Turnbull, a tenant farmer who died in 1777. Also buried here is Agnes Riddel, wife of another William Turnbull (also a tenant farmer), presumably a son, who died in 1771, aged 49. Carved in the upper panel is a gryphon, a ferocious mythic beast with an eagle's head and wings and a lion's body and hind-quarters. In heraldry, the gryphon is a device used by the Riddel family on their crest. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
