Description Detail of carved headstone.

Catalogue Number SC 570612

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 59239/18

Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Margaret Ballantine, Castleton Old Churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Margaret Ballantine, who died in 1715. The inscription is difficult to read, but it appears that her husband, Thomas Beattie, is also buried here. Depicted here are Margaret (right) and Thomas (left), hands clasped, carved in relief upon the reverse of the stone. Thomas is clad in the long fully buttoned jacket of the time and both wear some sort of cloth cap. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
