Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Agnas Madar and family, Minto churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Agnas Madar, wife of a tenant farmer, who died in 1751 aged 55. Also buried here are her son Andrew and daughter Agnas who both died in 1751, aged 21 and 25 respectively. Finely carved in relief, this portrait shows Agnas intently reading an open book, presumably the Bible, which symbolises her belief in the Word of God. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
