Scope and Content Glencadam Distillery, Brechin, Angus (Angus council area) This distillery was founded under the provisions of the 1823 Act passed to encourage small-scale distillation. It passed through a number of hand before being acquired in 1954 by Hiram Walker and Sons (Scotland ) Ltd, who rebuilt it in 1959. This view shows the interior of the still house, with the spirit still in the centre, and part of the wash still on the right. The flanged joint between the body of the wash still and its neck was characteristic of Hiram Walker practice. This distillery now belongs to Allied Distillers, successors to Hiram Walker, who closed it in 2000. Hiram Walker's 1959 rebuild may have improved efficiency, but did not improve the appearance of the complex. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
