Scope and Content Glenugie Distillery, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This distillery was established by Donald, McLeod and Co, It passed through many hands, and was a brewery for a time. It was rebuilt in the 1870s, and eventually became part of Long John Distillers Ltd, taken over in 1975 by Whitbreads and closed in 1983. This view shows the tower of a windmill situated beside the distillery. This was probably a pumping windmill used to raise water for operating the distillery. Glenugie was a very small and old-fashioned distillery, and succumbed to the downturn in the industry in the early 1980s when many smaller distilleries were closed. It has since been demolished.
