Scope and Content Glenugie Distillery, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This distillery was established by Donald, McLeod and Co, It passed through many hands, and was a brewery for a time. It was rebuilt in the 1870s, and eventually became part of Long John Distillers Ltd, taken over in 1975 by Whitbreads and closed in 1983. This view shows the tun room, with traditional wooden washbacks. Note the timber-framed roof. The hopper at the far end is the grist hopper, sited above the mash tun, and containing crushed malt ready for mashing. Glenugie was a very small and old-fashioned distillery, and succumbed to the downturn in the industry in the early 1980s when many smaller distilleries were closed. It has since been demolished.
